About Unidos do Quilombo
Unidos do Quilombo was founded in April 2008 in the spirit of the samba schools that parade in Brazil's Carnaval celebrations. A community organization based at Chicago's Quilombo Cultural Center in the city's Logan Square neighborhood, UdQ's mission is to promote the creation, performance and preservation of Brazil's rhythmic traditions. UdQ has performed at Chicago's Summerdance Festival, the Chicago Marathon and regularly appears at Brazilian music events around the city.
Unidos do Quilombo plays many of Brazil's well known rhythms like samba and samba-reggae. Members also have the opportunity to learn less popular but equally dynamic rhythms such as maracatu, coco, maculelê, as well as contemporary songs by Brazil's popular artists.
Unidos do Quilombo is led by bateria director Felipe Fraga.
